Ubisoft has unveiled a suite of announcements to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the Ghost Recon series. Headlining the celebration is a significant free update for 2017's Ghost Recon: Wildlands, alongside confirmation that a new entry in the franchise is in development.

The free update for Ghost Recon: Wildlands, titled "Last Rites," introduces a new narrative arc centered on a vengeful antagonist named La Llorona. Players will confront her cultist followers, Los Penitentes, in challenging missions that emphasize difficult terrain, limited visibility, and reduced support. This update also brings long-requested features to the game, including 4K resolution and 60 frames per second performance on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC. Graphical enhancements and expanded customization options are also included, allowing players to adjust time of day and weather for missions, and fine-tune specific difficulty parameters independently of the overall difficulty setting.

"Last Rites" integrates gameplay elements previously exclusive to modes like Ghost Mode, such as authentic reloading mechanics, the option to equip one or two primary weapons, and an optional friendly fire setting. Players can also disable UI elements like highlight glows for interactable objects and preview sightlines for throwable items, with muted sounds for hidden UI elements enhancing immersion. The update also adds numerous free cosmetic items, including previously unreleased camos and anniversary-themed gear, and brings back the popular Predator mission.

In addition to the Wildlands update, Ubisoft is offering extended free weekends for both Ghost Recon Wildlands and 2019's Ghost Recon Breakpoint. Both titles are available to play in full from today until August 10. Ghost Recon Breakpoint will also receive a special 25th-anniversary bundle. Furthermore, Ubisoft is giving away 2012's Ghost Recon: Future Soldier for free through Ubisoft Connect until August 13. A franchise-wide sale offering up to 95 percent off is also underway across PlayStation, Xbox, Steam, and Ubisoft Connect platforms.

Looking ahead, Ubisoft confirmed that the next Ghost Recon game is actively in development. Ghost Recon live producer Irina-Gabriela Popa stated that the team is working on delivering a fresh experience that retains the series' core tenets of tactical action, large-scale operations, and credible military storytelling. To involve the community in the development process, Ubisoft is launching an Insider Program that will offer early access to closed tests and facilitate feedback from players.
