The concept for the standalone game
God of War Laufey
, which centers on Kratos's late wife Faye, was conceived as early as 2018, according to actress Deborah Ann Woll. Woll, who reprises her role as Faye in the upcoming title and also voiced the character in
God of War Ragnarok
, revealed on stage at Game Con Canada that she has been aware of the project for nearly a decade. She stated that Cory Barlog, director of the 2018
God of War
reboot and now head of Sony Santa Monica's creative output, pitched the idea to her in 2018, with development knowledge predating that year.
Woll recalled that Barlog presented her with a poster for the Faye game when discussing the 2018
God of War
and the plans for
Ragnarok
. This artwork reportedly featured Woll's character alongside a distinctive gelatinous cube, Phranque. "A cube that's been there since the beginning. It's deeply a part of the lore," Woll stated regarding the character, who was a notable presence in
Laufey
's reveal trailer.
Woll also shared her positive experience with Sony Santa Monica's motion capture technology during her work on
Laufey
. She expressed initial skepticism about its ability to accurately translate her facial expressions, particularly after observing Kratos's stoic demeanor in the previous games. However, upon seeing the final result in
Laufey
, she was impressed by the technology's fidelity in capturing subtle muscle movements, which contributed to a richer character portrayal. "They caught every little muscle movement that my face can make," she explained, adding that this attention to detail was instrumental in bringing the character to life.
Development and Platform
God of War Laufey
is currently in development exclusively for the PlayStation 5. While no official release date has been announced, industry speculation suggests a potential 2027 launch window. Sony has indicated that it no longer plans to release its non-live-service titles on PC, making a computer port for
Laufey
unlikely.
