Santa Monica Studio has offered a new hint regarding the release window for the upcoming God of War Laufey, suggesting it will arrive before the end of 2027. This indirect confirmation comes via a tweet that assures players the game "will be available on disc."

The statement appears to address concerns following Sony's announcement that it will cease physical media production for PlayStation games in January 2028. By confirming a disc release for God of War Laufey, the studio indicates its launch will occur prior to this transition.

San Diego Comic-Con Panel and Development Insights

Further details about God of War Laufey are expected at an upcoming panel at San Diego Comic-Con. The event will feature game director Ariel Lawrence, head of creative Cory Barlog, and members of the cast. The game was revealed earlier this year during Summer Game Fest, generating significant discussion, particularly around its new protagonist, Faye. Actress Deborah Ann Woll, who voices Faye, revealed that the concept for the character originated as far back as the 2018 God of War reboot.

God of War Laufey is in development exclusively for the PlayStation 5. While a specific release date remains unannounced, the 2027 timeframe has been suggested. The studio has also indicated that PC ports will not be pursued for this title, aligning with Sony's current strategy for non-live-service games.

Sony's decision to transition to digital-only releases from January 2028 onward impacts all PlayStation games, including those not published by Sony Interactive Entertainment. This includes traditional disc-based releases and even code-in-a-box retail options.
