Takashi Yamazaki, the writer and director behind Godzilla Minus Zero, has stated that there is a "fifty-fifty" chance he would return to direct a third Godzilla film. Yamazaki expressed contentment with the current ambiguous ending of Godzilla Minus Zero, feeling it allows the audience to interpret the story as they wish. However, he admitted that it would be somewhat disappointing if this were his final Godzilla movie.
Yamazaki has other projects lined up, including his first major Hollywood studio movie, Grandgear, which is slated for a February 18, 2028 release. This live-action sci-fi mecha film, set to star Sam Nivola, Nico Parker, and Paul Giamatti, is something Yamazaki has long wanted to create. He is writing and directing Grandgear, with Bad Robot producing.
Despite his upcoming commitments, Yamazaki indicated a desire to revisit the Godzilla franchise at some point in his career to explore further expansion of its world. This comes after Godzilla Minus One's significant success in 2023, where it garnered a strong box office performance on a modest budget and a small VFX team. The film also achieved critical acclaim, winning an Oscar for Best Visual Effects, a first for a Japanese film, and notably had the smallest budget of any VFX winner in nearly a decade.
Yamazaki previously told IGN that when approaching Godzilla Minus Zero, he consciously set aside the urge to outdo his previous work on Godzilla Minus One, emphasizing the danger of diluting a film's core strengths by focusing on external comparisons. Godzilla Minus Zero is notable as the first R-rated Godzilla film and the first Japanese film specifically shot for IMAX, and was described in an IGN review as "Good" with "satisfying and visually amazing scenes of giant-monster destruction."
