The upcoming Godzilla Minus Zero, the latest installment from Toho, has officially confirmed the appearance of King Ghidorah in its first full trailer. This revelation comes after weeks of fan speculation about which kaiju might challenge Godzilla in the post-war setting.
The trailer, released September 8, 2026, begins by depicting familiar characters like Kôichi Shikishima and Noriko Ôishi facing the return of Godzilla. However, the familiar screech of King Ghidorah quickly signals the arrival of Godzilla's most formidable adversary. "Don't worry," a character can be heard stating in the trailer, "this isn't Godzilla we're talking about," implying a distinct threat beyond the titular monster.
An official description for Godzilla Minus Zero states, "War reduced Japan to zero, and Godzilla plunged it into minus. Two years have passed since then, and the country has faced agonizing struggles to achieve recovery and finally reclaim its daily life. Just as humanity managed to cling to a hard-won peace, a new threat strikes, crushing hope in an instant. There is no third time. Everything ends here."
While fan theories ranged widely, including a humorous suggestion of an Anguirus variant dubbed "Gravity Anguirus," the trailer points definitively to King Ghidorah. The alias "Monster Zero" for the three-headed, lightning-breathing creature now aligns thematically with the film's title.
Although King Ghidorah does not make a full visual appearance in the trailer, the distinct sound of its roar is present. The trailer also offers glimpses of a yellow scale and Godzilla falling from the sky, strongly hinting at an epic kaiju battle. Godzilla Minus Zero is slated for release on November 6, 2026. It is unclear how King Ghidorah and Godzilla will encounter each other. The film marks the first Japanese production to be shot for IMAX, following the critical and commercial success of Godzilla Minus One, which was produced on a modest budget in 2023. Takashi Yamazaki returns as writer, director, and VFX supervisor for the sequel. The narrative suggests this may be the final film in the series, as indicated by the phrase "no third time."
