Rockstar Games is implementing a staggered global digital release for Grand Theft Auto VI on November 19, a strategy that has prompted some players to plan ahead for early access. Rather than a simultaneous worldwide unlock, the game will become available at midnight in each local time zone. This means players in New Zealand will experience the earliest release, approximately 20 hours ahead of those in regions like Mexico.
The digital-only launch means there will be no physical discs to acquire for early play, even though the game will feature an entirely single-player experience. While pre-loading will be enabled, the game itself will remain locked until its designated unlock time based on the player's geographical location.
Analysis of timestamps on the PlayStation Store indicates 15 distinct release windows across the globe. The rollout commences in New Zealand at 11 a.m. UTC on November 18, which corresponds to midnight on November 19 local time. This presents the earliest opportunity for players on Xbox Series X/S to jump in by adjusting their console's region settings. For PlayStation 5 users, this particular method is not directly supported, though creating a separate New Zealand account funded via a gift card could theoretically achieve early access.
Following New Zealand, the game's release will proceed through subsequent time zones, including Australia, Japan, and India, before moving through mainland Europe and the United Kingdom. In the United States, players will generally experience a midnight Eastern Time release, granting West Coast players a few additional hours before their local midnight unlock.
Grand Theft Auto VI is slated for release on November 19. Pre-orders will allow for pre-loading starting November 12, the same day that boxed copies, which contain a digital download code, will begin shipping. Rockstar has yet to confirm the required storage space for installation.
