Rockstar North's Rob Nelson, co-studio head, has clarified that while the relationship between Grand Theft Auto 6's protagonists Jason and Lucia is central to the narrative, engaging with their romantic side is entirely up to the player. "Don't bother with it if you aren't. Up to you," Nelson stated in an interview with IGN.
The game's structure necessitates that Jason and Lucia remain partners throughout the story, facing circumstances that require them to work together. However, players who are not interested in developing their romantic bond will not face any in-game penalties. Nelson explained that the team aimed to explore whether they could add emotional resonance to the GTA experience for those who wish to engage with it, while also providing mechanisms for players to opt out.
For those who do wish to nurture the relationship, the expansive map of Leonida offers numerous opportunities. These include activities such as robbing places together, walking on the beach, scuba diving, or visiting the zoo. Nelson noted that actively managing their relationship can create a sense of stewardship and protectiveness over the pair as a unit.
"When you bring them together, it feels like you’re a steward of their relationship, and you feel protective of them as a unit," Nelson said. "But this is something we did not know when we started, and it really had to be something we felt our way through. But I will say that whether you’re getting in trouble, or you’re running from the cops, or getting in a car, or waiting for the other one — playing as them together feels very cool. It feels like you’re taking care of them, if that’s something you’re into."
Grand Theft Auto 6 is scheduled to launch on November 19.
