Grand Theft Auto 6 will incorporate role-playing game-like mechanics that affect its protagonists, Lucia and Jason, according to new details revealed by Rockstar Games. These features include the ability for players to manage their characters' needs for eating, exercising, and sleeping, influencing their physical appearance and potentially gameplay.
In an interview with Dazed magazine, Rockstar North co-studio head Rob Nelson discussed the studio's iterative development process and its aim to evolve gameplay systems. He highlighted how previous games are reviewed critically to identify areas for improvement, whether due to time, resources, technological capabilities, or simply a lack of thorough consideration.
Eating will impact the weight of Lucia and Jason, while working out will visibly alter their physique and strength. A lack of sleep is also set to negatively affect their appearance, though its direct impact on gameplay remains to be clarified. These mechanics echo elements seen in Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, which allowed players to manage protagonist CJ's weight and fitness. Grand Theft Auto 5 also included a stat system for improving stamina and strength through in-game activities.
Beyond character management, the game will feature a social media feed, a feature speculated about by fans since the GTA 6 trailer debut. Character switching, returning from Grand Theft Auto 5, will allow players to control the duo together or separately. The Dazed interview teased that the relationship between Lucia and Jason is central to the narrative, with player choices carrying consequences that run deeper than the honor system in the Red Dead Redemption series.
Grand Theft Auto 6 is scheduled to release on November 19th for Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5. Rockstar Games recently addressed a series of leaks, calling the situation "heartbreaking" while reaffirming their commitment to delivering a high-quality product.
