Grand Theft Auto 6 is set to reintroduce a beloved feature from Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas: a dynamic weight and muscle system for its protagonists. In a recent interview with Rockstar Games developers, it was confirmed that both playable characters, Lucia and Jason, will see their physical appearance change based on player actions and consumption.

Players will be able to influence their characters' bodies by engaging in activities like working out at the gym to build muscle mass or consuming fast food to gain weight. Conversely, regular exercise can lead to weight loss and improved muscle definition. The second official trailer for Grand Theft Auto 6 notably features Jason engaged in physical training, suggesting this system will be visually represented.

Beyond intentional character building, the game will also incorporate consequences for sustained in-game activities. If players neglect basic needs such as sleeping or engage in prolonged evasion from law enforcement, or endure "multi-day benders," the characters' faces and bodies will reflect these circumstances. This approach expands upon the realism implemented in Red Dead Redemption 2, where elements like persistent bruises and the ability to grow beards without shaving were featured. The ability to drastically alter a protagonist's physique has not been a core feature in the Grand Theft Auto series since San Andreas, originally released in 2004.

Rockstar North's head of development and co-studio head, Rob Nelson, explained the studio's iterative development process, stating, "We look back at our previous games with a critical eye. And see where we want to evolve based on what we didn’t do as well as we would have liked to, either because we didn’t have the time, resources, or technological capabilities, or in some cases things we just didn’t do as well or consider as fully as we could have." This philosophy suggests a commitment to refining and enhancing gameplay mechanics based on past experiences and player feedback.

Grand Theft Auto 6 is scheduled for release on November 19 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox. Rockstar Games will also debut the first official gameplay footage of Grand Theft Auto 6 on Netflix on August 27.
