Despite Grand Theft Auto VI's impending November 19 release, concrete gameplay details remain scarce. Rockstar Games has so far offered only two trailers and a collection of screenshots since the game's 2023 announcement. This limited reveal strategy stands in contrast to conventional marketing practices for titles with such a short time until launch.

However, Rockstar's historical approach to promoting its flagship titles, notably Grand Theft Auto V and Red Dead Redemption 2, suggests a significant marketing campaign is on the horizon. The debut of GTA V's first trailer occurred in November 2011, with a second trailer following a year later. The game's primary marketing push began in April 2013, just months before its September release. This period included a three-part trailer focusing on protagonists, a press event featuring a 30-minute gameplay tour, and detailed write-ups shared on May 2, 2013. A gameplay trailer arrived on July 9, followed by a trailer specifically for Grand Theft Auto Online on August 15, and a final official trailer on August 29.

Rockstar also implemented a controlled preview strategy for GTA V, with only a select few outlets receiving early access to impressions. IGN published an exclusive preview on September 3, 2013, as part of a series of lead-up stories, with similar previews appearing in French and German outlets on the same day. Reviews were released the day before the game's launch.

Red Dead Redemption 2 followed a similar pattern in the two years between its 2016 announcement and 2018 release, featuring multiple trailers, hands-off previews, some hands-on impressions shortly before launch, gameplay trailers, and a launch trailer. This historical precedent points to a likely rollout of gameplay trailers for Grand Theft Auto VI this summer, accompanied by guided previews from select media.

While the anticipation for GTA VI has been prolonged, Rockstar's established marketing cycle suggests that players can expect a significant increase in revealed content monthly leading up to the November launch. The company's careful management of information for past major titles, including tightly controlled press access, indicates a similar strategy for GTA VI, even with its substantial stakes. Players awaiting gameplay footage before committing to an $80 preorder may find that such information will become available in the coming months.
