Rockstar Games and parent company Take-Two Interactive are not expected to reveal details about Grand Theft Auto VI's online component anytime soon, according to a new report. While GTA 6 is slated for release on November 19, information regarding its multiplayer and online features, which have been a significant revenue driver for the franchise through GTA Online, has been conspicuously absent.
Bloomberg's Jason Schreier reported that Take-Two's current discussions about GTA 6 focus exclusively on its single-player aspects, which are not anticipated to include recurring revenue streams or microtransactions. "They have not talked at all, and they are not planning to talk anytime soon, about what the new GTA Online will look like and what that recurring spend will look like," Schreier stated. This silence comes as a surprise to some, given that GTA Online, even over a decade after its initial release, is reportedly generating over $500 million annually.
When Rockstar initially announced preorder details for GTA 6, the game was described solely as a "single-player experience," with no mention of online support. This lack of information has led to speculation about how Rockstar will transition from the highly successful model of GTA Online to whatever comes next for the franchise. Some analysts suggest that any decision Rockstar makes regarding the online component could potentially alienate portions of its player base.
The next significant preview of Grand Theft Auto VI is scheduled for August 27, with an "extended look" set to premiere on Netflix. This upcoming showcase has drawn criticism from some players who view the trailer's placement on a subscription service as effectively putting it behind a paywall, a move seen by some as indicative of current industry trends.
Grand Theft Auto VI is scheduled to launch on November 19 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.
