Despite earlier rumors suggesting a potential physical disc release for Grand Theft Auto VI, a new report indicates the game will be digital-only, with no disc-based versions planned at launch or in the months that follow.
The Hollywood Reporter cited sources close to the matter, stating that "There are no plans for Grand Theft Auto VI discs to be printed--not at launch, and not months after." This clarification comes after a fan shared a purported conversation with Rockstar Support, where an agent allegedly mentioned the availability of a "physical copy during the following months." While this Rockstar Support email was confirmed as real, the report suggests the phrasing was misinterpreted.
According to the report, the term "physical copy" likely referred to retail versions of the game that would include a code within the packaging, rather than a disc. The Rockstar Support agent's comment about acquiring a "physical copy" in the "following months" was described as an imprecise reference to the period after preorders go live on June 25, not the game's November 19 release date. Preloading for Grand Theft Auto VI is scheduled to begin on November 12.
While many players appreciate physical media, industry experts suggest that a digital-exclusive release will not negatively impact overall sales. However, the absence of a disc-based option may disappoint enthusiasts who prefer to own physical copies of their games. This move also aligns with industry trends and potentially helps Rockstar mitigate the risk of early game leaks. The game is set to launch with a standard edition priced at $80 and an ultimate edition costing $100, which includes additional in-game content.
