Ahead of an extended preview on Netflix, Rockstar Games has shared new details regarding Grand Theft Auto 6, focusing on protagonist management and the reactive nature of Vice City.

Protagonist Care and Self-Expression

According to Rockstar North co-studio head Rob Nelson, players will need to actively manage the well-being of protagonists Jason and Lucia. Similar to mechanics seen in GTA: San Andreas, the duo will require attention to exercise, diet, and rest to maintain their physical condition. Working out will visibly increase muscle mass, while overeating will lead to noticeable weight gain. Rockstar aims to allow for player "self-expression" without compromising the core identities of the characters, who begin the game with specific backgrounds: Jason as an ex-military drug runner and Lucia having recently completed a prison sentence.

Sustained lack of sleep or constant evasion of law enforcement will also impact their condition. The game will allow players to switch between Jason and Lucia seamlessly, or focus on one character. Nelson emphasized the studio's desire to create characters that players connect with, stating, "Their story becomes a journey you share with them."

Vice City's Emphasis on Appearance

Vice City itself is designed around themes of vanity, and the appearance of Jason and Lucia will hold significant weight when interacting with the city's inhabitants, including social media stars, celebrities, and tourists. How players choose to present their characters will influence these interactions.

A More Reactive World and Detailed NPCs

Rockstar is working to make the world of Grand Theft Auto 6 more responsive to player actions, with consequences intended to be more profound than in previous installments. The studio has invested significant effort into creating a diverse and detailed NPC population. Years were spent in Miami and its surrounding areas to capture the authentic atmosphere, with the development team engaging with a wide array of individuals, from club promoters and law enforcement to ex-criminals and gun dealers, to inform NPC design.

New tools were developed specifically to "build the most detailed and varied character population" for GTA 6. Rockstar's Los Angeles office was dedicated to NPC development, and the studio collaborated with over 50 street artists to create murals for the game. Vehicle handling was also refined with input from professional race-car drivers.

Following recent leaks, the first substantial look at GTA 6 will be showcased in an extended preview on Netflix, with subsequent releases planned for platforms like YouTube. Rockstar acknowledged the leaks earlier this week, describing them as "heartbreaking" for the team ahead of the game's November launch on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.
