Rockstar Games has detailed how fishing and hunting mechanics will function in Grand Theft Auto 6, revealing a more streamlined approach for fishing compared to Red Dead Redemption 2.

In Grand Theft Auto 6, fishing will be a catch-and-release experience, according to Rockstar North's Rob Nelson in a discussion with YouTuber TGG. Nelson explained that the inability to keep caught fish was a design choice, stating, "It didn't fit this game." The fishing system is primarily intended for entertainment, offering players opportunities to complete related challenges and collect various items.

This contrasts with Red Dead Redemption 2, where players could catch, keep, and cook fish, a feature that aligned with the 1899 setting. For GTA 6, set in modern times, protagonists Jason and Lucia have constant access to food, making the survival aspect of fishing less relevant. Consuming food in GTA 6 will impact player weight, with excess calories usable for building muscle at the gym.

The hunting system in Grand Theft Auto 6, however, will serve as a method for players to generate income within the game. Nelson indicated that this system is unlocked via an acquaintance of Jason, though this character has not yet been showcased in any released footage. Similar to Red Dead Redemption 2, players will be able to "inspect" creatures, both fish and hunted animals.

Beyond wildlife interactions, GTA 6 will also feature dogs that players can interact with, including petting, scolding, and inspecting. The game is scheduled for release on November 19 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Additionally, Sony and Rockstar announced a GTA 6-themed DualSense controller during the September 3 State of Play event.
