The impending launch of Grand Theft Auto 6 is significantly influencing video game release schedules for 2026, prompting developers to adjust their launch plans to avoid direct competition. A Plague Tale developer Asobo has described the game's dominance as that of an "ogre," a sentiment echoed by many studios facing the challenge of releasing their titles in the same year.
Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy, developed by Asobo, is set to launch in late August 2026, positioning it a few months before Grand Theft Auto 6's anticipated November arrival. This strategic placement highlights the industry-wide effort to navigate the market impact of Rockstar's highly anticipated title. The influence of GTA 6 on release calendars has been palpable for weeks, with publishers already rescheduling games from September or pushing them to early 2027 to sidestep its presence.
Eric Chort, producer for Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy, explained the constant consideration of GTA 6 throughout their production. "All the studios in the world were thinking about it," he stated. "When you know that GTA is coming, you know that in terms of marketing, in terms of players, the time to play games, GTA is like the ogre, it's the biggest one."
Developers are actively seeking ways to adapt, with the hope of mitigating the overwhelming market presence of GTA 6. "So you try to adapt, you...try to avoid it," Chort continued. "But then this year we see that there are only good games, or at least a lot of good games, so we're like, okay, that's the industry, and we try to make the best game possible."
This period is characterized by a notable number of high-quality game releases, making it a particularly challenging year for any new title. Asobo's approach is to focus on creating the most authentic and distinctive experience possible. "As a studio, this is the best you can do," Chort added. "You try to make the best game possible with what you have - the more authentic one. Have your identity make it different; try to make it different from all the other ones. After that, you've done your best and you'll see. But definitely it's an odd year to go out."
The ripple effect of studios avoiding GTA 6 has also made September and February particularly crowded months. Some titles, like Phantom Blade Zero, have moved their release dates to be closer to GTA 6's launch, seemingly to reclaim some breathing room. It is anticipated that further shifts in release dates will occur before September.
Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy is slated for release on August 27th, placing it at the beginning of this busy period. Early impressions suggest the game is shaping up well, offering a departure from its predecessors with a focus on combat and a new protagonist, Sophia, while retaining the core essence of the Plague Tale series.
