As preorders for Grand Theft Auto 6 approach their June 25 launch, a French retailer, FNAC, briefly listed the game with prices significantly higher than current industry standards. These listings showed the standard edition at €89.99 (approximately $103 USD), with other editions escalating to €199.99 (around $230 USD). However, a report from Dealabs, citing the reliable insider billbil-kun, indicated that these prices were likely random placeholders.
Despite the likelihood that the listed prices are not final, industry analysts have commented on the potential for such high figures. Mat Piscatella, an analyst with Circana, told Eurogamer that while the specific amounts might be placeholders, the general price points are "possible and plausible" for a title of GTA 6's magnitude. He noted that Rockstar Games and its parent company, Take-Two Interactive, possess considerable pricing flexibility.
Further analysis from Rhys Elliott of Alinea Analytics suggests that while a standard edition price exceeding £100 in the UK is possible, it is improbable. Elliott anticipates a more conventional price range of £70-£80 for the base game in the UK. He theorizes that Rockstar will likely price the standard edition competitively, relying on more expensive, premium versions of the game to capture revenue from "whales" – players willing to spend significantly more. This strategy allows the company to satisfy a broad player base while maximizing profit from dedicated consumers.
Many anticipate that GTA 6's standard edition will exceed the $70 mark, a price point already becoming more common for AAA releases. With preorders for the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S versions set to go live on June 25, official pricing details are expected to be revealed soon. While a PC version has not been officially announced, historical patterns suggest it will eventually be released. The game is currently slated for a November 19 launch.
