Grand Theft Auto 6's detailed relationship system between protagonists Jason and Lucia has drawn criticism from some individuals on social media who liken the in-game romance to cheating on a real-life partner. The concern centers on mechanics that allow players to nurture the protagonists' bond through activities like texting, going on dates, and even engaging in intimate moments.

Several TikTok creators have voiced strong opposition to their partners playing the game, citing the need to maintain the virtual relationship. One user stated, "In absolutely no human way is my fiancé playing GTA 6... You literally have to maintain a relationship with a girl [in] the video game and text her, and she'll get mad if you don't text her back. You have to take her on dates and you can have [sex] with her." Other content creators have labeled such gameplay as outright cheating.

This discourse emerged following the release of extended gameplay details for Grand Theft Auto 6 on August 27. Some commenters have pushed back against the accusations, arguing that virtual relationships within video games should not impact real-world relationships. The Sims, a popular life simulation game where players engage in virtual relationships and family-building, is often cited as an example of similar mechanics that have not caused widespread controversy.

Rockstar Games has clarified that engagement with the relationship system is optional. While Jason and Lucia are intended to have a relationship from the outset, players can choose how deeply to pursue it. Not actively nurturing the bond will not prevent the characters from cooperating effectively in critical moments, though a stronger relationship may offer additional benefits.

Rob Nelson, co-studio head at Rockstar North, described the experience of managing the protagonists' relationship as feeling like a "steward of their relationship." He noted that the development team found the dynamic compelling, especially when playing as the characters together during intense gameplay scenarios. "It feels like you’re taking care of them, if that’s something you’re into," Nelson stated.

Details regarding the extent of physical intimacy between the characters remain somewhat ambiguous. Trailers suggest sexual scenes, but whether players can actively initiate them through relationship progression is unclear. Nelson acknowledged that physical intimacy is a significant aspect of any relationship and that Rockstar is focused on implementing it in a way that feels appropriate for the game.

Past Grand Theft Auto titles have featured relationship elements. GTA 4 allowed players to develop relationships that could lead to invitations for intercourse, though it was not explicitly depicted. A more controversial interactive sex mini-game was included in Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas but was removed prior to release to avoid an Adults Only rating. The existence of these files in the game later led to significant issues for Rockstar, including legal challenges and government scrutiny, making explicit interactive sexual content unlikely in GTA 6.
