Grand Theft Auto VI is poised for an enormous commercial launch, with research firm Newzoo projecting that the game could generate between $3.3 billion and $5.2 billion in global sales during its first week. This forecast places the upcoming title significantly ahead of Grand Theft Auto V's initial performance, which achieved $1 billion in revenue within its first 72 hours of release in 2013.

Newzoo's predictions are based on its proprietary Game Performance Monitor and are influenced by strong preorder indicators. The firm estimates that digital spending for GTA 6 reached approximately $180 million in the final week of June across the United States and five major European markets: England, France, Germany, Italy, and Spain. By applying GTA 5's lifetime console player distribution ratio—where these six markets account for about 69% of players—Newzoo extrapolates this regional figure to a global first-week estimate of around $260 million in preorders.

Proven Sequel Sales Trajectory

GTA 6 falls under Newzoo's classification of a "Proven Sequel," a designation given to massively anticipated entries in established series that adhere to a tried-and-tested formula. Such titles typically exhibit stronger sales curves, as their dedicated audiences tend to purchase the game without waiting for reviews or price reductions. Newzoo estimates that preorders for GTA 6 represent roughly 5.8% of cumulative sales during its launch week. Using the $260 million preorder estimate, this suggests a potential launch week revenue of $4.5 billion, translating to approximately 51 million copies sold at an assumed average selling price of $88.

Even under a more conservative projection, where GTA 6 is categorized as a "Sequel with Performance Uncertainty," the game is still expected to achieve exceptional results. In this scenario, Newzoo forecasts $3.3 billion in sales volume and 37 million units sold in its first week. This more conservative model accounts for about 3.8% of revenue in week one, compared to the 5.8% for a "Proven Sequel." If GTA 6 were to front-load its sales even more aggressively at approximately 8% of its total week one revenue, it would still result in approximately $3.3 billion in cumulative sales, or around 37 million units.

Newzoo also addressed unconfirmed reports suggesting GTA 6 garnered over $1 billion in preorder revenue within its first three weeks. The firm dismissed these claims as "absurd." While Rockstar's parent company, Take-Two, has not released any preorder sales data, an update could be provided during its next earnings briefing in August.

Grand Theft Auto VI is scheduled to launch on November 19 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. The game will be available in a standard edition for $80 and a premium edition for $100, which includes additional digital extras. All preorders will also include an auto-renewing membership. Notably, the game will be a digital-exclusive, with no physical disc versions available, even for retail copies.
