Rockstar Games recently unveiled 63 new screenshots for Grand Theft Auto VI, showcasing an impressive level of detail that has captivated fans. However, analysis from tech experts at Digital Foundry suggests these images may not accurately represent the real-time gameplay experience players can expect on consoles at launch.
The screenshots, which offer a detailed glimpse of the game, feature elements like ray-traced reflections and even a view of a car's engine through the underside of its hood, drawing praise for their visual fidelity. Despite the striking quality, Digital Foundry author Tom Morgan expressed skepticism about whether these visuals are achievable on any of the planned console platforms for Grand Theft Auto VI's November release.
Morgan stated that it is "unlikely" the screenshots represent real-time results on platforms such as the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, or even a potential PS5 Pro. Evidence suggests that the combination of pristine image quality, potentially indicating native 4K rendering or higher, and inconsistent lighting on foreground characters casts doubt on their feasibility in actual gameplay. Digital Foundry could not definitively confirm the platform used for the screenshots, noting that a final verdict awaits the game's release.
These highly polished visuals may have originated from Rockstar's development environment, where creating a "perfect shot" without frame-rate constraints is possible. The suggestion is that the screenshots were not captured during actual gameplay, or perhaps were created using a photo mode, a feature not yet officially announced for Grand Theft Auto VI. Morgan elaborated that generating such images within the game's development tools, with all settings maximized and precise control over framing and lighting, would be a straightforward process for Rockstar.
While ray tracing is an anticipated feature for the console versions of Grand Theft Auto VI, the extent to which it will be realized in real-time gameplay on base PS5, Pro, and Series X consoles remains to be seen. Rockstar has described Grand Theft Auto VI as the series' "biggest and most immersive evolution yet," promising a massive open world. Performance targets for resolution and frame rate across the consoles have not yet been confirmed by the developer.
