Grand Theft Auto 6 is poised to significantly evolve the series' iconic car-stealing gameplay, introducing a more complex and immersive system for acquiring vehicles. Recent details suggest that the act of stealing a car will no longer be a straightforward button press, but rather a nuanced process influenced by vehicle security and player skill.

Unlike Grand Theft Auto V, where liberating vehicles was a relatively simple affair, GTA 6 will implement a tiered security system. According to IGN, more valuable and technologically advanced cars will require specific tools and skills to steal. This implies that players will need to strategize which vehicles to target and when, taking into account the associated risks and required methods.

To aid in this endeavor, protagonists Jason and Lucia will have access to a "wank scanner." This device will provide crucial information regarding a car's security features and its overall value, allowing players to make more informed decisions. While the full extent of theft protection measures remains unknown, some vehicles are expected to feature electronic keys that will need to be digitally cloned. Others may be equipped with electronic tracking devices that trigger law enforcement if the vehicle's speed drops below a certain threshold, encouraging sustained high-speed driving after a theft.

Beyond the act of acquisition, GTA 6 will also enhance the process of disposing of stolen vehicles. The game will feature a fence system for stolen goods, a mechanic more akin to that found in Red Dead Redemption 2. This system will allow players to sell any car they manage to steal, offering a lucrative side-hustle within the game's world.

The preview also hinted at more surprising discoveries within stolen vehicles. A scene depicted Lucia finding an influencer in the trunk of a car, suggesting that players might encounter unexpected items or characters in ill-gotten gains. This opens the door for a variety of emergent scenarios, from finding illicit substances to stumbling upon unusual cargo.

Grand Theft Auto 6 is scheduled for release on November 19 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X.
