Grand Theft Auto 6 is currently targeting a 30 frames per second frame rate at launch on consoles, according to reports stemming from a recent developer visit. Rockstar Games has not committed to a 60 FPS performance mode for the game's release, and its implementation remains uncertain.

Rob Nelson, Head of Development at Rockstar North, reportedly shared this information with YouTuber Davy Jones during a visit to the studio. According to Flow Games, which translated Nelson's comments, the console versions are running at 30 FPS during the development period. Nelson indicated that consultation with the technical team is necessary to determine if a 60 FPS option will be available at launch or in the future. Details regarding resolution and other technical features, such as ray tracing, were not provided, but the current performance target remains 30 FPS.

This reported 30 FPS cap aligns with Rockstar's approach to previous major open-world titles. Grand Theft Auto V did not receive a 60 FPS option until its enhanced version for the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S. Red Dead Redemption 2 has not yet received an official 60 FPS upgrade for current-generation consoles.

The possibility of enhanced performance on potential mid-generation hardware, such as the PlayStation 5 Pro, is also unclear. It remains to be seen if even a 40 FPS mode for 120Hz displays might be feasible if 60 FPS proves unattainable.

The 30 FPS limitation would not necessarily apply to a PC version of Grand Theft Auto 6, though a PC port has not yet been officially announced and is expected to arrive at a later date. Historically, PC players had to wait approximately 18 months for Grand Theft Auto V to become available on Steam, raising questions about the potential wait time for the PC version of its successor.
