A recent modification for Grand Theft Auto V introduces a fleet of Flock cameras throughout Los Santos, allowing players to engage in their destruction. The mod, created by WTTDOTM, adds 235 cameras that function similarly to their real-world counterparts.
As players navigate the game world, they are subjected to constant surveillance. The mod incorporates a mechanic where passing through a camera's field of view has a 1 in 20 chance of triggering an unwarranted police chase, mirroring criticisms of the technology's accuracy. This feature aims to add a layer of surveillance anxiety to the gameplay.
However, the mod's primary design intent is to provide a target for player aggression. The creator has emphasized the desire for players to destroy these cameras. Showcased in a video montage, players can dismantle the cameras using various in-game weapons and vehicles, including cars, rocket launchers, and tanks. This destruction is gamified through a system that rewards players with components from destroyed cameras for quick cash, and a dedicated speedrun mode tracks how rapidly players can eliminate them.
WTTDOTM has expressed strong disapproval of Flock cameras, stating in a TikTok video that "Flock is a scourge on America." The modder noted that the 235 cameras added to Los Santos represent approximately one-tenth of the cameras reportedly installed in Los Angeles County, the basis for the game's city setting.
