Guild Wars 3 will be set approximately 1,000 years before the events of the original Guild Wars, developer ArenaNet has revealed in a new video detailing the game's setting. This timeline places the upcoming massively multiplayer online role-playing game before the legendary in-universe battles that gave the series its name.
The foundational story of the Guild Wars series revolves around three pivotal in-universe battles. However, across two released titles and two decades of gameplay, players have yet to directly experience these iconic conflicts. The newly revealed setting for Guild Wars 3 confirms this trend will continue, as the game will explore a period when human gods were still present in the kingdom of Orr.
During this era, the gods bestowed magic upon the kingdom's trusted guilds. Players will align with one such guild, the Vaelwardens. These guilds are distinct from the ones that later engaged in the namesake guild wars. Those later conflicts arose many years after the gods departed Orr, a departure attributed to dragon-related events. Guild Wars 3 is set prior to this exodus.
Despite the absence of the major guild wars, the game's setting will still feature significant threats. The announcement video teases challenges such as dealing with individuals who covet magic they were not gifted and others who seek to misuse newfound powers. However, the characters will need to live for over a century to witness the historical guild wars, as the gods are still active in Guild Wars 3's proposed timeframe.
The period in Orr preceding the guild wars holds many mysteries, but several key events from this time shaped the overarching series narrative. These include the god Abaddon granting magic to all races, not exclusively humans, and the ascension of Grenth to the pantheon. The lore also indicates further divine activities that influenced the world.
Original Guild Wars was noted for its emphasis on guild-vs-guild player-versus-player combat, which may have lessened the impact of not witnessing a canonical guild war. Nevertheless, the question of experiencing these wars resurfaces periodically, particularly among newer players.
Guild Wars 3 was a notable reveal during this year's Summer Game Fest. ArenaNet has already garnered positive attention by confirming that the game will not feature a subscription fee or a battle pass system. Further in-depth developer insights are expected as the game approaches its planned beta release in the fourth quarter of 2027.
