Summer game showcases often bring a mix of anticipated and surprising reveals. Gundam Rogue Orbit was one of the latter, initially presenting a graphical style and tone distinct from the familiar Gundam aesthetic, until iconic elements like floating bits, visors, and a Haro companion confirmed its franchise origins. The game is described as a "fast-paced cinematic story with intense, hard-hitting combat in an all-new universe."
Chief producer Shinya Satake stated that Gundam Rogue Orbit's mission is to introduce the Gundam franchise to audiences unfamiliar with it, necessitating a completely new universe and original characters. "Gundam as an IP is very big and it's very important to us," Satake said, expressing honor in being entrusted with a new entry in the expansive Gundam lore. A significant focus throughout discussions with the development team was appealing to action game fans, though specific game inspirations were not cited.
Main producer Yuya Tomiyama elaborated on the combat design, emphasizing the goal of creating a "truly good and satisfying" gameplay experience for the player, which the team believes is the primary method for reaching new action game enthusiasts. The game also aims for a seamless transition between ground and aerial combat, with a core focus on the satisfying feel of the action. "We just really wanted to focus on the [...] satisfying feel that the player would have, playing the action game," Tomiyama noted.
The game's enemies also deviate from traditional Mobile Suits, featuring multi-limbed, beast-like designs resembling dragons and scorpions. While producers declined to detail the narrative implications of these designs, Tomiyama confirmed their development was driven by the desire to create engaging opponents for an action game.
The visual style is also crafted to attract players outside the existing Gundam fanbase. Tomiyama highlighted the lead character, Rex, as a relatable figure through whom players can experience the game. The overall aesthetic, including a more photorealistic portrayal of Gundam, aims to resonate with a worldwide audience. "We really hope [this] resonates with the worldwide fans. But the first overall objective of this game is to create a satisfying action game," Tomiyama said.
Gundam Rogue Orbit is slated for a 2027 release on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC. The franchise's international popularity has seen fluctuations, with series like Gundam Wing and The Witch From Mercury driving surges in interest. With the current resurgence of mech-driven action titles like Armored Core, Gundam Rogue Orbit appears positioned to capitalize on renewed interest in the genre.
