Marty O'Donnell, the composer behind the iconic soundtracks for Halo and Destiny, has seen his political ambitions halted following the recent US mid-term elections. Running as a Republican in Nevada's Third Congressional District for a seat in the US House of Representatives, O'Donnell is projected to lose the race. The Associated Press called the election this morning, with incumbent Democrat Susie Lee leading O'Donnell by a significant margin. Lee holds 59.1 percent of the vote to O'Donnell's 38.6 percent, a deficit of over 51,000 votes, with 86 percent of ballots counted.
O'Donnell, who gained prominence for his musical contributions to Bungie's celebrated titles, entered politics after his dismissal from the studio in 2014. His campaign platform focused on economic improvement, support for small businesses, enhanced border security, and anti-corruption measures. While he did not accept funding from corporate Political Action Committees, he received support from the Trump-aligned Safety and Affordability Super PAC, which notably withdrew $2 million in advertising funds last month.
O'Donnell's public statements have drawn scrutiny during his campaign. He has previously described LGBTQA+ individuals as an "existential threat" alongside Marxism and Islamists, and has spoken out against same-sex marriage equality. These comments generated controversy as he sought elected office.
Following his departure from Bungie, O'Donnell successfully pursued a legal settlement against the developer, claiming he was terminated "without cause." A subsequent 2021 judgment found O'Donnell in contempt of court for uploading Destiny assets to his YouTube channel.
