A humorous new mod for Halo: Campaign Evolved, available through early access for the game's PC release, replaces every human non-playable character with the beloved Sergeant Avery Johnson. The mod, titled "Everyone is Sgt. Johnson," comes from modder Kaleidescoop and, as its name suggests, inserts Sergeant Johnson into all human NPC roles, including critical characters like Captain Keyes and Lieutenant Williams.

Master Chief, who is technically a biologically enhanced human, remains unaffected. The mod does introduce some audio discrepancies, as many voice lines are now spoken by Sergeant Johnson, with the modder noting that "a lot of voice lines break because, well, they're all Sgt. Johnson." Despite these potential audio issues, Kaleidescoop believes the mod should function adequately for most of the game's levels.

The proliferation of Sergeant Johnson in the game is perhaps unsurprising, given his status as one of the most popular characters in the Halo universe, alongside Cortana and Master Chief himself. Introduced in the original Halo: Combat Evolved, Johnson was depicted as a resilient unit commander fighting alongside Master Chief. The game's legendary ending famously showed him seemingly perishing on a Halo ring during an explosion.

However, Johnson's popularity with fans led Bungie to find a way to reintegrate him into the series. He reappeared in Halo 2 without explicit explanation, a plot point later elaborated upon in the 2003 novel Halo: First Strike, which detailed his miraculous survival and escape from the ring. Throughout Halo 2 and Halo 3, Johnson became known for his distinctive one-liners, cementing his place in the franchise's lore and player affection.

Though Johnson met a definitive end in Halo 3, his enduring appeal persists. His revival through methods like cloning in the game's narrative has become a running theme, reflecting the idea that his character, much like the best soldiers, never truly disappears but is merely accounted for in different ways.
