Halo Studios appears to be continuing the franchise's tradition of including secret endings with its latest release, Campaign Evolved. The game, which recently launched in early access with a full release scheduled for July 28th, features hidden scenes that point towards a potential remake of Halo 2.

Upon completing the campaign on its highest difficulty setting, players are treated to a secret ending on the Legendary mode. This scene shows Sgt. Avery Johnson on the Halo ringworld, observing a recreation of the original game's ending. Before boarding a Pelican craft, Johnson turns to the camera and states, "See you in the sequel," a remark that could be interpreted as either a meta-commentary or a direct confirmation of future content.

A separate post-credit scene, accessible regardless of the chosen difficulty, features the character 343 Guilty Spark. This ominous orb is depicted traveling through space towards a distant planet, a visual cue that directly sets up the narrative for Halo 2.

The inclusion of these teasers has fueled speculation about a Halo 2 remake, a possibility that was perhaps foreshadowed by early marketing materials for Campaign Evolved. The development of Campaign Evolved involved adapting Unreal Engine for a Halo title and creating assets that could easily be repurposed for subsequent games. Elements such as SMGs, the battle rifle, hijackable vehicles, and even the introduction of the Brutes in bonus pre-campaign missions were apparently developed with future installments in mind.

While the prospect of a Halo 2 remake is met with some optimism, the broader context of Microsoft's recent actions casts a shadow over the future of its gaming division. The company recently announced significant job cuts within its gaming sector, and reports indicate widespread unease among remaining staff. Although Halo remains a flagship franchise for Xbox, and its development teams may currently be protected, Microsoft's history of canceling announced games raises concerns about the long-term security of such projects. Therefore, while the future of the Halo remake series is intriguing, a degree of caution is warranted.
