For the first time in its history, the Halo franchise is expanding to PlayStation with the upcoming release of Halo: Campaign Evolved. This 25th-anniversary project, scheduled to launch on July 28, will also introduce crossplay and cross-progression, allowing PlayStation players to team up with friends on Xbox for the game's four-player co-op.

Game director Greg Hermann explained that the move to PlayStation is a natural progression, building on the franchise's expansion to PC and the team's experience with cross-platform development. "We were building on a lot of foundation work that Unreal Engine provides for us, but it really wasn’t too foreign to us to add another platform," Hermann stated. The development team ensured that resources were budgeted across development timelines to deliver a premium experience for all supported platforms.

While the game will be available on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC, early details suggest that the PlayStation 5 Pro version may offer the most enhanced experience. This iteration is expected to utilize PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution, SSD optimization for faster loading times, and 3D audio. Additionally, it will feature exclusive DualSense controller functionalities, leading to speculation that even Microsoft's Xbox Series X might struggle to match the fidelity and immersion offered on the PS5 Pro.

Although Halo Studios has not explicitly stated that the PS5 Pro is the definitive platform for Halo: Campaign Evolved, the planned enhancements point towards a superior performance on Sony's hardware. This move follows a broader trend initiated by Xbox, which has begun bringing some of its previously exclusive franchises, such as Gears of War: E-Day and Clockwork Revolution, to other platforms. Whether future Halo titles will follow suit remains to be seen, but for now, the focus is on the successful launch of Halo: Campaign Evolved across multiple platforms.
