Halo co-creator Marcus Lehto has shared his vision for reviving the popular franchise, suggesting a departure from the series' current trajectory. Lehto described a potential new Halo game as "darker" and "more grounded," with a distinct focus on gameplay mechanics. In this proposed design, player-versus-environment (PvE) modes would form the "heart and soul" of the experience, while player-versus-player (PvP) would be considered the "brains." He emphasized that this iteration would not aim to please all fans, stating it would "not be 'everyone's' Halo."

Lehto also addressed the franchise's lore, which he believes has become excessively convoluted and may be alienating potential players. His proposed solution involves carefully integrating the existing lore into a new foundation, allowing both veteran and new players to experience Halo "fresh and unencumbered." This would entail setting aside much of the current lore, respecting it, but building a new future narrative that is more coherent.

However, Lehto expressed skepticism about his ideas being implemented, citing his doubts about Xbox CEO Asha Sharma's commitment to revitalizing the franchise. He called his proposals "fanciful" and suggested that current leadership at Xbox may not be interested in such a revival.

Furthermore, Lehto criticized the current development practices, particularly the outsourcing of game development. He pointed to the example of "Halo: Campaign Evolved," which was developed by multiple external studios, as a case where outsourcing may have harmed the game. Lehto asserted that "outsourcing killed the game," arguing that a new Halo title "must be built by a local team together, not outsourced around the globe to a group that has ZERO investment in making something great." While acknowledging that different teams could work on specific parts of a game, he stressed that the core experience must originate from a centralized, cohesive team.

This is not the first time Lehto has voiced strong opinions on the Halo franchise. Previously, he criticized "Campaign Evolved" for what he perceived as pandering to players with short attention spans, although he also acknowledged appreciating some of the game's upgrades. Recent reports suggest that Microsoft might consider enlisting Sledgehammer Games, a developer known for its work on Call of Duty, to create a new Halo game.
