Science communicator Hank Green, known for his educational YouTube channel Complexly, has revealed an "unhealthy relationship" with generative AI tools like ChatGPT, which has prompted him to consider pausing his main channel. The admission follows fan scrutiny over a recent video where some viewers accused Green of reading AI-generated text.
In a July 29 episode of "Ask Hank Anything," a segment where Green responded to a viewer's question about pushback featured a line that some identified as sounding similar to AI-generated content. While Green initially denied the specific line was AI-written, stating it was an ad-lib, he acknowledged a broader issue.
"I think it’s fair to say I was relying too much on [AI] generated notes," Green stated in a since-deleted tweet. "That’s a thing I’ve been doing, and it’s a bad habit at a time when I’ve overcommitted myself." He later elaborated on a Reddit thread, apologizing to fans and explaining his intention to re-evaluate his content creation habits.
Green described his interaction with large language models as providing a level of dopamine that he believes is "not healthy for me or good for the world." He noted that his wife and brother have also expressed concerns about his current engagement with AI, indicating a need for personal readjustment.
While some online criticism focused on the potential negative impact of AI on critical thinking, many of Green's fans responded with understanding and support for his candor. Some expressed appreciation for his willingness to address the balance between pursuing interests and creating content, and voiced a desire to retain his distinctive personality in his work.
Green indicated that he is likely to pause his main channel activities and reduce his overall content output as he works to recalibrate his approach to AI tools and his own creative process.
