The latest issue of Marvel's Iron Man comic has delivered a stunning revelation: Happy Hogan, Tony Stark's former best friend and bodyguard, is the new Citizen V. This unexpected return, occurring in Iron Man #9, marks the first time Happy has been alive in the comics since his apparent death during the 2006 Civil War event.

Writer Joshua Williamson explained that Happy's resurrection was a deliberate choice aimed at forcing Tony Stark to confront his past and the emotional baggage he carries. "Tony has been through so much, and he needed a ghost from his past to haunt him," Williamson told IGN. "Happy and Tony were best buds and his death was heartbreaking for Tony. Bringing him back wasn't just about the shock factor, it was about forcing Tony to confront the things he thinks he’s moved past." This development ties into the ongoing theme of the series that Tony's mind, rather than the Iron Man armor, is the true weapon. Happy's return directly challenges Tony's self-perception.

Williamson confirmed that the idea of Happy Hogan returning as Citizen V was part of his original pitch for the series. The twist is integral to the larger narrative, significantly impacting how Tony views his own history and forcing a period of self-reflection. Happy Hogan, with his intimate knowledge of Tony's character, is positioned to be a crucial figure in the upcoming "Incarcerated Iron Man" arc, beginning in issue #12.

While Happy harbors resentment from his perceived abandonment during the Civil War era, his actions as Citizen V have consistently aimed at protecting Tony. "Everything he has done has been about protecting Tony from himself…and the world from Tony," Williamson noted. "At the end of the day, Happy is still looking out for Tony."

The unmasking and subsequent interactions reveal a complex dynamic between Happy and Tony, with a significant fallout expected from the secrets kept. Notably, Pepper Potts was aware of Happy's survival and his activities as Citizen V, a fact she withheld from Tony. "Oh, absolutely! Tony is going to be PISSED. There is fallout from that break in trust," Williamson teased. "But Tony also has a lot more to deal with before he can really talk to Pepper about it. There are reasons Happy was brought back and we still have the question of WHO brought him back...?"

The storyline is set to continue in Iron Man #10, available on October 14.
