The Harfoots, a nomadic ancestral hobbit group featured prominently in the first two seasons of Amazon's The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, will be taking a "backseat" in the show's third season, according to co-showrunner J.D. Payne.

This shift marks a significant change for the characters, who have been central to the series' narrative thus far. In Season 1, the Harfoots discovered and journeyed with the Stranger, who is later revealed to be Gandalf. Season 2 saw Harfoots Nori Brandyfoot and Poppy Proudfellow travel to Rhûn, where they encountered early hobbit ancestors known as the Stoors and eventually parted ways with Gandalf to join the Stoors on a new migration.

While Payne stated that "never count a Halfling out," it remains unclear if Nori will make a cameo appearance or if the Harfoots will return in a more significant capacity in future seasons. The decision to reduce their role comes amid a mixed reception from some viewers who found their storyline slow, questioned deviations from J. R. R. Tolkien's established lore regarding hobbits in the Second Age, and expressed criticisms regarding their portrayal.

The upcoming Season 3 is set to focus on other key narrative threads, including Sauron's efforts to forge the One Ring, the introduction of Galadriel's husband Celeborn, and Gandalf's full emergence as the wizard. There are also indications that future seasons might explore a Gollum origin story, with co-showrunner Patrick McKay suggesting that "lots of ideas for future seasons" are in development.

The official synopsis for The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power Season 3 sets the stage for Middle-earth at war, five years after the fall of Eregion. Sauron's armies are depicted as having conquered much of the world, with only isolated strongholds like Khazad-dûm and the elven realms of Lindon and Rivendell standing against his total domination. Sauron's focus in Mordor is on forging the One Ring to bring his enemies to heel. The season promises a race against time for the free peoples of Middle-earth to unite and prevent Sauron's goal of utter domination.

The first four episodes of Season 3 are scheduled to premiere on November 11, 2026, with subsequent episodes releasing on November 18 and November 25. Amazon reports that The Rings of Power is one of its highest-performing and most-viewed titles, with Season 1 being the biggest TV series premiere in Prime Video history and Season 2 ranking among the Top 5 most-watched returning seasons. The series has garnered over 185 million viewers worldwide and is reportedly planned for a total of five seasons.
