Veteran game developer Harvey Smith, a pivotal figure in the creation of acclaimed titles like the Dishonored series and the original Deus Ex, has announced the formation of a new independent studio named Black Pony Immersive. The studio will focus on the immersive sim genre, a style of game design that Smith has significantly influenced throughout his career.
Smith, who most recently worked at Arkane Austin before its closure by Xbox in 2024, expressed his commitment to the genre that he helped to pioneer. "My favorite gaming memories come from seeing players approach challenges with creativity, deep-diving into our world building," Smith stated. "We try to reward players for their curiosity and exploration. At our new studio, we're building exactly the kind of single-player games we're most passionate about."
Black Pony Immersive's team includes former Arkane Austin collaborators Ricardo Bare and Ben Horne. Their combined experience spans major titles such as Deus Ex, Dishonored, and Prey. Smith highlighted his deep admiration for mentors like Warren Spector, whose retirement was recently announced, and his gratitude for the creative environments that foster game development scenes, citing Austin and Boston as examples.
Reflecting on his 16-year tenure at Arkane, Smith described the experience as exceptionally positive, despite the studio's recent troubles. He emphasized his desire for Black Pony Immersive to achieve longevity and creative success, drawing parallels to Arkane's prolific output and positive work environment over its 27-year history. "If that happens again, I will absolutely count myself as blessed," he commented on the prospect of replicating such success.
Smith affirmed his dedication to the immersive sim genre, stating, "Always. Until I am dead." He shared his enthusiasm for upcoming titles in the genre, including Judas, Marvel's Blade, and games from other developers, demonstrating his continued engagement with the evolving landscape of immersive experiences. The studio plans to reveal more details about its first project in the near future.
