Eric Barone, the acclaimed creator of Stardew Valley, has offered an update on his upcoming game, Haunted Chocolatier, emphasizing the painstaking detail and personal investment driving its development. In a recent blog post, Barone acknowledged the extended development time, stating that he feels compelled to ensure that nearly every player interaction within the game is "perfect," encompassing aspects like seamlessness, clarity, intuitiveness, satisfaction, and aesthetic appeal.
Barone detailed his iterative process using the creation of an in-game recipe book as an example. He explained that this seemingly simple UI element has undergone numerous revisions, each aimed at refining its functionality and presentation. "To me, it’s not a simple task, as I torture myself over every last detail," Barone stated. He elaborated on the need for efficient navigation, balancing the amount of information presented to the player to avoid overwhelming them while still providing sufficient detail. The visual layout, he stressed, is crucial for readability and aesthetic appeal, requiring careful grouping of data into "compelling, intuitive and easy to read/understand groupings" to be "appealing and intriguing."
He aims for more than just player comfort, striving to "delight the player." This pursuit of perfection, he noted, often necessitates multiple iterations before he is satisfied. Barone also highlighted that Haunted Chocolatier is a significantly larger project than Stardew Valley, meaning many similar elements require an exceptional level of adjustment and detail. "This is what it will take to make a game I’m satisfied with," he asserted.
This dedication to detail extends to Barone's reluctance to share frequent updates, screenshots, or early details. He likens it to serving "a half-baked bread" if the final product deviates from early impressions, preferring to present a "fully baked bread." While he has engaged help for maintaining Stardew Valley post-launch, Haunted Chocolatier appears to be a largely solo endeavor, mirroring the development of his previous success. Stardew Valley took four and a half years to create, and Haunted Chocolatier has been in development for six years. Barone noted that he has improved his time management between the two projects, but still requests patience from fans as he works to achieve his vision for the game.
