HBO's Green Lantern series, titled Lanterns, has subtly woven a connection to the Batman mythos into its narrative. In the third episode, a seemingly innocuous detail—a sign for Janus Cosmetics—appears during John Stewart's interview sequence. This company is intrinsically linked to the notorious Batman villain Black Mask, suggesting a potential future presence for the character in the newly established DC Universe.

The interview, which takes place in an abandoned shopping mall, sees a Guardian of the Universe questioning John Stewart about his past. Amidst the disorienting setting, a prominent sign for "Janus Cosmetics" is visible. While not directly interacted with by Stewart, this branding carries significant weight within DC Comics lore.

Janus Cosmetics is famously the business founded by the Sionis family. In the comics, Roman Sionis inherits the company but his mismanagement, including the rushed release of a faulty product that disfigured customers, leads to its financial ruin. This disgrace forces him to accept a bailout from Bruce Wayne, fueling Roman's deep resentment and his transformation into the Gotham crime lord Black Mask. The name "Janus" itself is a nod to the Roman god of beginnings, endings, and duality, a fitting association for a character like Roman Sionis.

Black Mask has previously appeared in live-action, with Ewan McGregor portraying the character in the 2020 film Birds of Prey. However, that film was part of the previous DC Extended Universe continuity. The appearance of the Janus Cosmetics sign in Lanterns does not necessarily confirm the return of McGregor's iteration but firmly places the company, and by extension, the mythology of Black Mask, within the new DC Universe being shaped by James Gunn. This could be a deliberate Easter egg or an early indication of a new version of Black Mask being developed.

Beyond Black Mask, the Janus Cosmetics branding may also hint at future developments for Clayface. The upcoming Clayface movie, directed by James Watkins and written by Mike Flanagan, is expected to fuse elements from different origin stories of the character, including those involving cosmetic treatments. While no explicit connection has been confirmed between Janus Cosmetics and the Clayface movie, the thematic overlap offers a potential avenue for narrative synergy within the broader DC Universe.

This is not the first instance of Lanterns referencing Batman's corner of the DC Universe. Earlier in the series, Sheriff Kerry Kane mentions her origin in Gotham City. Although Lanterns primarily focuses on its own narrative in Rushville, Nebraska, these connections suggest a deliberate effort to integrate elements from across DC's rich history into the new continuity. The prominent display of the Janus Cosmetics sign, however, suggests it may be more than just a casual nod, potentially laying groundwork for significant future storylines.
