Helldivers 2 has received its substantial "Devoid of Liberty" update, introducing a suite of changes that aim to bolster player support and challenge them with new threats. The update significantly overhauls the Super Earth Armed Forces (SEAF) soldiers, transforming them from incidental allies into more capable combatants.
Enhanced SEAF Support
The "Devoid of Liberty" update sees SEAF soldiers integrated more directly into combat scenarios. No longer just passive followers, SEAF squads will now be deployed via dropships to join Helldivers on missions. Each deployed squad includes a leader, a rifleman, a heavy weapons specialist, and a medic. These troops are better equipped and now possess improved combat behaviors, including the ability to use Stim pistols and heavy machine guns. Furthermore, SEAF soldiers have been given new interactive capabilities. They can now engage with players using emotes, allowing for actions such as shaking hands, playing rock-paper-scissors, and offering hugs.
New Threats Emerge
In addition to the allied reinforcements, the update introduces two new enemy types from the Illuminate faction. The Wretch is described as a relentless and nimble foe, requiring quick reflexes and precise aiming to counter its evasive maneuvers and rapid attacks. The Crusher is a larger, regenerating enemy that demands sustained focus and concentrated fire to overcome its resilience.
Quality-of-Life and Progression Updates
The "Devoid of Liberty" update also addresses several player progression and gameplay systems. The maximum Helldiver level cap has been significantly increased from 150 to 300, introducing new ranks, titles, and rewards for dedicated players. Emote slots have also been doubled, expanding players' expressive options on the battlefield from four to eight.
Several gameplay mechanics have been refined. The assisted reload system has been simplified, reducing the coordination required and allowing players to retain their backpack while still enabling teammates to assist. Stims are now more responsive, with input smoothing ensuring that stim actions are executed as soon as they become available. Players can also expect faster recovery times after heavy landings and balance adjustments to short magazines and secondary weapons, which have seen increased magazine capacities and improved overall utility. The reload mechanic for the R-2124 Constitution primary weapon has been updated to include a full stripper clip reload when the magazine is empty.
Warbond and Further Fixes
Coinciding with the new enemy additions, the "Castellan's Creed" Warbond, a crossover with Warhammer 40,000, is now available. The patch notes also detail numerous bug fixes and minor adjustments, including improvements to enemy AI, vehicle handling, UI elements, and the behavior of various stratagems and weapons. For instance, the Eagle Napalm Airstrike now has a larger area of effect, and MD-17 Anti-Tank Mines have increased demolition strength.
Helldivers 2 is currently available as a free PlayStation Plus Extra/Premium game for the month.
