Saber Interactive's upcoming Hellraiser: Revival aims to immerse players in the grim and disquieting world of Clive Barker's cult horror franchise. The first-person action-horror game, which drops players into the role of Aidan Lynch, is designed to be a faithful adaptation that embraces the series' trademark discomfort and violence.

Aidan's predicament begins when his girlfriend is taken by the Cenobites, the dimension-hopping demons known for their unique brand of torture. In a desperate attempt to rescue her, Aidan makes a pact with Pinhead, the franchise's most infamous Cenobite. This deal, however, is foreshadowed to have dire consequences for Aidan.

The gameplay mechanics in Hellraiser: Revival draw parallels to traditional survival horror titles. Players will encounter obstacles such as locked doors and a variety of puzzles, all while being pursued by menacing entities. While firearms are available for combat, ammunition is scarce, making melee weapons a more readily available option. However, direct confrontations with the Cenobites themselves are not the primary focus; instead, players will contend with tortured souls and a group known as the Cult of the Scarlet Church, described by the developers as human followers of the Cenobites.

The combat, while standard for a first-person action game, is designed to feel brutal. Even the human cultists, presented in a BDSM-inspired aesthetic, pose a significant threat, capable of dispatching the player in few hits. The dodge mechanic is highlighted as a crucial tool for survival.

A central gameplay element is the Genesis Configuration, a new puzzle box created by Saber Interactive, distinct from the iconic Lament Configuration. This new box serves multiple purposes: it can summon Cenobites, its specific function remains a spoilable secret, and it can be used to manipulate the environment and engage in combat. During a hands-on demonstration, the Genesis Configuration was shown pulling items like saw blades towards the player, which could then be used to dismember enemies, reminiscent of the gravity gun from Half-Life 2. The developers have indicated that further uses for the Genesis Configuration will be discovered as the game progresses.

Beyond combat, puzzles play a significant role. One demonstrated puzzle required players to use the Genesis Configuration to rotate parts of a tunnel, forming a platform to advance. This segment, devoid of combat, maintained a palpable tension, a deliberate design choice to keep players on edge even during quieter moments. Approximately two hours of the game will be set within the Labyrinth, the hellish dimension from which the Cenobites hail. This section will feature no combat, with the Genesis Configuration serving as both a narrative device and an environmental manipulation tool.

The game's aesthetic and pervasive tension are key features. Revival does not shy away from extreme gore, dismemberment, and torture, ensuring the atmosphere constantly evokes the horrors of the Labyrinth. The game often forces players into claustrophobic environments and narrow passages. One sequence in the demo featured a hallway that dynamically transformed, creating a disorienting and panic-inducing escape scenario, drawing comparisons to the unsettling environment of PT, the teaser for the canceled Silent Hills game.

Saber Interactive stated that maintaining the franchise's disturbing tone was paramount, even if it meant forgoing concessions for ratings. "We knew how disappointed Hellraiser fans would be if we did compromise, so it was just never really on the table," explained narrative director Anthony de Fault.

Hellraiser: Revival is intended to be canon within the franchise, offering an additional draw for long-time fans. However, the game's intense gore and pervasive tension are designed to appeal to horror enthusiasts even without prior investment in the Hellraiser lore. The game is scheduled for release on October 8 for PC, Xbox Series X, PlayStation 5, and Switch 2, aligning with the Halloween season.
