Games Workshop has shared new details regarding its Warhammer 40,000 cinematic universe spearheaded by Henry Cavill, alongside updates on new Amazon animations based on its tabletop games. Following the December 2024 agreement with Amazon to develop movies and TV shows, Games Workshop CEO Kevin Rountree announced that United Artists (UA) and director Mike Flanagan have been brought onto the project. Flanagan, known for his work on horror series such as "The Haunting of Hill House" and "Midnight Mass," has completed initial outlines and is expected to begin scripting soon. Henry Cavill, a noted Warhammer 40,000 enthusiast, remains involved in the project, alleviating concerns about his potential departure. Rountree indicated that UA has brought "decisive" contributions to the project, suggesting that further news on the live-action series' setting and characters may emerge as scripting progresses. The involvement of Flanagan, a horror specialist, suggests the live-action adaptation might lean into the horror elements inherent in the grimdark 40,000 universe, which includes themes of body horror and intense cosmic conflict. Cavill himself has previously described the adaptation as a "dream come true" and highlighted the "complexity" and "trickiness" of bringing the IP to screen, expressing enjoyment in the challenge of translating its nuances. He has also indicated an interest in portraying characters such as the Primarchs or Captain-Generals. In addition to the live-action series, Games Workshop announced progress on animated content. An episode for Season 2 of Amazon's animated anthology series "Secret Level," set in the Warhammer: Age of Sigmar universe, is nearing completion. Furthermore, a full animated Warhammer 40,000 series focusing on the Deathwatch is in development, with John Orloff writing and Blur returning as animators for Amazon.
