Hideo Kojima's upcoming Xbox exclusive, "OD," is reportedly safe from the recent wave of cuts and cancellations at Microsoft's gaming division. According to sources speaking with IGN, Xbox will continue to publish the experimental horror title, which was announced in late 2023. This positions "OD" as one of the few projects currently in development that Microsoft intends to support as the company reevaluates its strategies for profitability.
Earlier this week, Microsoft reportedly pulled funding from IO Interactive's new online fantasy RPG, leading the studio to initiate layoffs. While IO Interactive indicated its determination to release the game, it will require a new publisher.
Microsoft stated that it is undertaking a "reset" of its Xbox business, leading to a reevaluation of priorities. However, the company also clarified that its overall investment in games will remain consistent with the previous year, with approximately the same amount allocated to content. The shift lies in the focus and types of projects being backed.
"OD" is described as an unconventional project for Kojima, who characterized it at its announcement as "a game and at the same time a movie and at the same time a new form of media." Director Jordan Peele is involved in an undisclosed capacity. The project's unique nature led Kojima himself to express uncertainty about its potential success, though it appears Xbox has been a consistent supporter, even when other publishers reportedly showed no interest.
The last public glimpse of "OD," which Kojima Productions revealed as "Knock" during a summer 2025 showcase featuring footage on Unreal Engine, was some time ago. Precious little information has emerged since that reveal.
