Hidetaka Miyazaki, the acclaimed director behind titles such as Elden Ring and the Dark Souls series, has publicly responded to persistent online rumors suggesting a personal fascination with feet, often referred to as a "foot fetish," which some fans believe is reflected in his game designs. In an interview with The Guardian, Miyazaki addressed the speculation directly.

"It's not necessarily something I’m consistently aware of--maybe it’s something subconscious coming through," Miyazaki stated when asked about the presence of bare feet on numerous female characters in his games. He added, "Take a look online and there’s a rumor that I have a bit of a thing for feet, but I’m not honestly sure where this comes from."

Fans of FromSoftware's titles have pointed to several characters across the studio's history as evidence for this theory. Notable examples include The Maiden in Black from Demon's Souls and Priscilla, Gwynevere, Sister Friede, and Maneater Mildred from the Dark Souls games, all of whom are depicted without footwear. Elden Ring continues this trend with characters like Malenia, who sports prosthetic metal feet, and even in-game environmental details that distinguish between bare feet and footwear on player characters on the game's beaches.

Miyazaki offered a broader explanation for these design choices, suggesting they are tied to his intention to explore aspects of human nature and existence. "I feel like I’m trying to depict some side of human nature or the human existence that is difficult to describe,” he elaborated in the interview.

Despite the fan theories, Miyazaki maintains that these design elements are not a conscious fixation and do not represent a "Tarantino situation," referencing the director Quentin Tarantino's own known foot-related preferences. The discussion arises amidst a broader trend where player observations and interpretations of game design elements frequently spark widespread online conversation and speculation.
