HBO has officially renewed House of the Dragon for a fourth and final season, which will conclude the Targaryen war of succession. The news comes after the season three finale aired on August 9, leaving viewers with numerous unanswered questions regarding character fates and the future of the Seven Kingdoms.

The upcoming season is expected to adapt the latter half of George R.R. Martin's book "Fire & Blood." Showrunner Ryan Condal's approach to adapting the source material has drawn commentary from Martin himself, with some character consolidations and omissions noted. Regardless of the specific narrative choices, the season is slated to depict the tragic downfall of the Targaryens, culminating in the eventual extinction of their dragons. This loss of their primary source of power will leave the house vulnerable to Robert Baratheon's later coup.

Season three's finale left Queen Rhaenyra in a precarious position. Despite the decimation of Hightower forces at Tumbleton, Rhaenyra faces increased threats. Her dragonrider Ulf the White has defected, and Hugh Hammer is also likely to follow suit after his wife's death. The perception of Rhaenyra as ruthless will be further cemented by events such as her dragonfire use at Tumbleton and her decision to execute the High Septon. The suicide of her pregnant half-sister, Helaena, will also contribute to her negative reputation.

Meanwhile, Aegon, believed dead, has reappeared with his dragon Sunfyre. He has reunited with his brother Aemond, who aims to depose Rhaenyra by seeking out his dragon Vhagar. Queen Rhaenyra's control over King's Landing is further weakened by Larys Strong's theft of the treasury and the defection of most of the Goldcloaks, who were funded by Ormund Hightower. Daeron Targaryen, another claimant to the Iron Throne, is also at large following the Battle of Tumbleton.

Regarding the release schedule, HBO has indicated that House of the Dragon season 4 is slated for a 2028 premiere. Filming has yet to commence, and scripts have not been distributed to the cast. Historically, there has been a two-year gap between seasons. If this pattern holds, fans can anticipate the season's debut in June 2028. In the interim, HBO plans to release the second season of "A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms" in 2027.
