Capcom's upcoming title, Onimusha: Way of the Sword, is aiming for a new level of realism in its sword-fighting animations, a process detailed by animation director Hiroshi Yugen in an exclusive preview. The development team prioritized a grounded and realistic approach to sword action, recognizing the significance of accurately portraying legendary sword master Miyamoto Musashi.
"We really wanted to focus on creating this very realistic, grounded sword action for the game," Yugen explained. The initial phase of development involved extensive self-study and research into the depths of swordplay. To ensure authenticity, Capcom partnered with experts in sword fight choreography and motion capture artists from Katsugekiza Motion Capture Studio, a facility known for its work on various films and dramas.
The animation process utilized Capcom's advanced motion capture studio, equipped with over 150 high-tech cameras. Stunt actors, guided by Yugen and the choreographers, performed fight sequences, including scenarios where Musashi is ambushed by ninjas. Yugen conveyed the specific game design requirements and mechanical rules of the action to the performers and choreographers to ensure the captured movements aligned with the game's vision.
Following the performance, the captured motion data was quickly integrated into Onimusha: Way of the Sword's RE Engine. This allowed for immediate review and revision of the animations within the game's engine, streamlining the iteration process. "We can take those and iterate until we get to a form of it where we're quite happy with the creation of the action that we've captured," Yugen stated. The final decision on which takes are used rests with the game's director, though actors themselves also provided feedback, sometimes requesting additional takes to achieve their desired performance.
This meticulous attention to detail and collaboration with experts has been central to shaping the combat for Onimusha: Way of the Sword, with the development team expressing confidence that the effort will be evident in the final game's action. Further insights into the game's development can be found in the full preview video and an upcoming feature in PC Gamer magazine.
