The upcoming horror game Ill, which has garnered attention for its graphic trailers, draws inspiration from Half-Life 2's notorious "We Don't Go to Ravenholm" segment, according to developer Team Clout. Max Verehin, CEO of Team Clout, clarified that while the game features intense visuals, its core intent is to evoke fear and entertainment rather than simply shock players.
Verehin explained that the development team, composed of individuals with extensive experience in the horror genre across various media, aimed to create a project that felt fresh and unconventional. He stated that the team's initial brainstorming is bold and unrestrained, followed by a process of finding balance to maintain uniqueness without crossing an undefined line. "We aren't trying to do gore for the sake of gore, as our game isn't 'gore porn,'" Verehin asserted. "It aims primarily to scare and entertain, rather than just shock."
The game's narrative, glimpsed in its latest trailer, reportedly centers on a mysterious plot set within a grim hospital, with the player emerging from a coma to clean up an unspecified crisis. Verehin described Ill as a combination of horror and action, suggesting that dispatching monsters offers a sense of fun against an oppressive backdrop. This approach, he noted, is inspired by the visceral combat found in Half-Life 2's Ravenholm, where players utilized environmental hazards and tools to combat enemies. Verehin believes that while Half-Life 2 achieved a specific emotional impact with its technology, Ill aims to replicate and elevate that feeling with modern standards.
Despite concerns that advanced graphics might make its depictions of violence, such as "skull explosions," too off-putting for some, Verehin acknowledged that no game can appeal to everyone. He pointed to the positive reception and high wishlist rankings for Ill on Steam as evidence that a significant audience is seeking this type of experience. "This audience knows exactly what they want and what they’ve been missing all this time, and they perfectly understand what we’re trying to achieve," Verehin commented.
Team Clout plans to reveal more content and mechanics for Ill in the future. The game is currently slated for a 2027 release.
