Filmmaker Kenji Kamiyama, known for his work on "Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex" and "Blade Runner: Black Lotus," will spearhead a new Gundam "multi-media universe" initiative set to begin in 2027. This project, dubbed the Gundam RG Project, will officially launch with the anime "Mobile Suit Gundam RG XARX-ZERO."

Announced at San Diego Comic Con, the RG Project is described as a "shared universe" intended to link multiple upcoming Gundam projects across anime, video games, and other media. This initiative represents a potential soft reset for the franchise's sprawling continuity.

"Mobile Suit Gundam RG XARX-ZERO" will be directed by Kamiyama, with animation by Sola Animations and a script by Toh Enjoe. Enjoe previously worked on the anime "The Ghost in the Shell," marking a notable collaboration with Kamiyama outside of his usual production roles. Sola Animations, also known as Sola Digital Arts, has a long history of working with Kamiyama on projects like "Ghost in the Shell: SAC_2045."

While "Gundam RG XARX-ZERO" is the first project slated for release within the RG Project universe, the game "Gundam Rogue Orbit" was announced prior. Bandai Namco Studios' "Gundam Rogue Orbit," a single-player action RPG revealed last month, is now understood to be part of this larger connected narrative. The anime "Gundam RG XARX-ZERO" is set approximately 100 years before the events of "Gundam Rogue Orbit," establishing a chronological starting point for the new universe.
