The Kingdom Hearts franchise is expanding to a new medium with the surprise announcement of an official animated series set to debut on Disney+. While few concrete details have been revealed about the series' plot, Kingdom Hearts creator Tetsuya Nomura has issued a memo encouraging fans to speculate freely about its content.
Nomura acknowledged the unexpected nature of the announcement and addressed potential fan questions regarding the series' direction. "I can’t say anything more right now, but the hint is in the single piece of key art that’s been revealed," Nomura stated. "Please let your imaginations run wild."
The sole piece of visual material released for the series so far features the back of a figure wielding a Keyblade. This character's attire, described as more barbarian-like than the typical cloaks seen on other Keyblade wielders, has fueled fan theories. Disney has confirmed that the series will tell an original story, rather than adapting existing game narratives.
This collaboration marks a significant formal integration between the Kingdom Hearts series and Disney since the games' inception. Despite the franchise's success, Disney has historically maintained a somewhat distant relationship with the games, a departure from its typical cross-promotional activities. A previous attempt at an animated Kingdom Hearts series by director Seth Kearsley in 2003 was reportedly rejected by Disney.
Nomura's directive for fans to "let your imaginations run wild" aligns with his approach to the sprawling, interconnected narrative of the Kingdom Hearts games, which famously blend elements from Final Fantasy with Disney properties. The ongoing evolution of this complex continuity, particularly concerning its intersections with projects like the Final Fantasy VII remakes, remains a subject of constant discussion among fans.
Some fans are already speculating that the mysterious character depicted in the key art might originate from one of the mobile Kingdom Hearts titles. Others have humorously suggested crossovers with obscure Miramax and Hollywood Pictures properties, envisioning Sora teaming up with characters from films like Encino Man.
