HBO has officially announced that the Game of Thrones prequel series, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, will return for its second season in the first half of 2027. The confirmation comes from HBO boss Casey Bloys, who shared the update with Deadline.
This release window means that the gap between the first and second seasons will be at most a year and a half, a relatively short turnaround in the current landscape of prestige television. This pacing is faster than that of its sibling series, House of the Dragon, which has seen two-year intervals between its seasons. The original Game of Thrones typically released seasons annually, with the exception of the final season's two-year wait, and A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms appears to be returning to that more frequent cadence.
The first season of the prequel adapted George R.R. Martin's 1998 novella, The Hedge Knight. Season two is set to adapt The Sworn Sword, the second novella featuring the adventures of Ser Dunk the Tall and his squire, Egg, who is later revealed to be Aegon Targaryen V, a future king of Westeros.
Should the series continue to a third season, it is expected to adapt the final novella in the original series, The Mystery Knight. While George R.R. Martin is reportedly writing a fourth book, it remains uncertain if that material will be adapted. If the show progresses beyond a third season, it may need to develop original storylines, similar to how HBO's Game of Thrones eventually did.
House of the Dragon is scheduled to begin filming its fourth season next spring, suggesting a potential 2028 release, while A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is slated for a 2027 premiere. Fans can anticipate new content from the Game of Thrones universe within the next year and a half with the upcoming season of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms.
