Three decades after the original release of Resident Evil 2, fans have identified the man depicted in a photograph on Jill Valentine's desk as actor Kyle MacLachlan. The image, found on a desk in the STARS office within the Raccoon City Police Department, was often commented on by characters Leon S. Kennedy and Claire Redfield, who speculated it was Jill's boyfriend.
The exhaustive research was conducted by a fan who documents background art in Capcom's games. This individual revealed that the man in the photo is indeed MacLachlan, a discovery that ends years of fan speculation. The photograph itself is a pin-up from a vintage Japanese movie magazine, possibly from 1992 when MacLachlan was featured to promote "Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me." The pin-up mentioned his upcoming appearance in the 1993 film "The Trial," an adaptation of Franz Kafka's novel. The pin-up image may have originated from a promotional shoot MacLachlan did for Subaru in the early 1990s.
Some players have debated the nature of the relationship, with interpretations suggesting Leon and Claire were merely assuming the man was Jill's boyfriend. However, Resident Evil 2's original game director, Hideki Kamiya, referred to the individual as Jill's boyfriend in a 2019 commentary, noting that the character's identity was unknown to many and regretting its omission in the remake. The STARS office itself is noted to contain other celebrity photos, including one of Winona Ryder and images from films like "Back to the Future Part 3."
When Capcom remade Resident Evil 2 in 2019, the photo was changed. Instead of a person, the image on Jill's desk became a Golden Retriever. Developers cited that "everyone likes dogs" as a reason for the change, altering the supposed boyfriend to "woman's best friend."
Polygon has reached out to MacLachlan's publicist for comment regarding any potential relationship with Jill Valentine in the late 1990s. At the time of Resident Evil 2's setting, MacLachlan had recently ended a relationship with Linda Evangelista in 1998.
