Portland-based stop-motion animation studio Laika has released a new trailer for its upcoming film, "Wildwood." The preview showcases a dark fantasy adventure that echoes the style of the studio's debut film, "Coraline," and draws thematic parallels to Jim Henson's "Labyrinth."

The film is set in an enchanted forest near Portland and follows Prue McKeel as she ventures into the dangerous woods to rescue her infant brother, Mac. Mac was abducted by a flock of crows on the orders of Alexandra, the mysterious and desperate ruler of the forest, who lost her own son. Prue is joined in her quest by her classmate Curtis Mehlberg.

The narrative setup shares similarities with "Labyrinth," where a young girl travels to a magical realm to save her abducted infant brother. "Wildwood" also appears to explore themes of tyrannical maternal figures, a common element in Laika's filmography, notably in "Coraline." While Prue seems to be making allies and navigating the magical world with ease, Curtis appears to be captured and forced into Alexandra's service, dressed in the uniform of her soldiers.

Directed by Travis Knight and written by Chris Butler, both of whom collaborated on Laika's "Kubo and the Two Strings," "Wildwood" features a notable voice cast including Mahershala Ali, Awkwafina, Angela Bassett, and Charlie Day. The film is scheduled for release on October 23 through Fathom Entertainment.
