After a 15-year hiatus, Lego is reintroducing SpongeBob SquarePants merchandise with two new sets scheduled for release on September 1. The first new offering is a comprehensive Bikini Bottom playset, recreating the underwater homes of SpongeBob, Patrick, and Squidward. This 1,794-piece set, priced at $220, features detailed minifigures with new parts and accurate coloring, aiming to delight long-time fans of the animated franchise.

However, the accompanying SpongeBob SquarePants BrickHead figure has ignited a wave of negative reactions from fans. Despite the general appreciation for the BrickHeadz line, many find this particular rendition of the beloved sea sponge to be a misstep. Common criticisms describe the figure as excessively thin and tall, with disproportionately small hands and oversized eyes relative to its body shape. Online commentary on platforms like BlueSky and Twitter has likened the figure to a "fridge" and questioned Lego's design choices.

While the printed details on the BrickHead's pants and tie have been noted as a positive aspect by some, the overall aesthetic has been widely panned. This contrasts with the more favorably received Bikini Bottom playset, which offers extensive detail for enthusiasts.

The dual release marks Lego's return to the SpongeBob SquarePants license, a move long anticipated by fans. The company had not produced new SpongeBob sets since 2009, leading to speculation about the status of the license. The new sets aim to cater to the persistent demand for SpongeBob-themed Lego products, with the hope that further expansions to the line may follow in the future.
