Mark Vanselow, who has spent over two decades as Liam Neeson's trusted stuntman across numerous films, is stepping behind the camera to direct the upcoming action thriller, The Mongoose. This marks Vanselow's directorial debut, a natural progression from his extensive experience in stunt coordination and second unit directing. "In the stunt world you kind of move up the ladder to stunt coordinating and then second unit directing, where you're directing a lot of the action," Vanselow explained in an interview with Polygon. "I've been doing that for a number of years. And in the position of stunt coordinator or stunt performer, I've worked with some amazing directors throughout my career. So it was like a constant university every day."
The Mongoose stars Neeson as Ryan "Fang" Flanagan, a military veteran who inadvertently steals a high-tech car and finds himself in a high-speed, cross-country chase. He is pursued by law enforcement, led by a determined Texas lawman played by Michael Chiklis, while simultaneously becoming a folk hero to supporters who assist him. The film promises the signature non-stop action, elaborate stunts, and gritty dialogue expected from a Liam Neeson thriller.
Vanselow and Neeson, long-time collaborators, focused on maintaining the actor's ability to perform many of his own stunts, particularly in close-combat sequences. "We're always trying to create action that he can do as much as possible," Vanselow stated. "Obviously, there's time constraints and issues of ability and safety, but Liam really endeavors to do as much as he possibly can, particularly when we're talking about the fight action." The film also places significant emphasis on the stolen car, described by Vanselow as a character in itself, equipped with an AI assistant. The car's chase sequences were a major challenge, handled by stunt coordinator Chris Weir and his team. "The car is a character in the movie," Vanselow said, "and it represents a lot of different things. It was a great challenge and I got to work with a really great team."
Beyond the action, The Mongoose delves into the experiences of military veterans, exploring themes of trauma and societal treatment. Fang's journey as he becomes a folk hero resonates particularly with other veterans who help him. Vanselow aimed to imbue the film with more depth than a typical action movie. "It's an action movie, but there's a lot of depth to it," he noted. "Hopefully it's one of those movies where you can go back and see it again and again, and keep finding other layers. It's not just a shiny car racing around the corner."
The Mongoose is set to release in theaters on October 30.
